Quick Thoughts on 3 Recent Movies

Over the last week I’ve seen 3 movies in the theater, so I thought I’d share my quick thoughts on each of them.

Booksmart: This is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year, definitely a contender for Top 10 of 2019, maybe Top 5. It’s a buddy comedy about two young women who are graduating high school and want to go on an adventure the night before graduation. I found it to be funny, smart, genuine, sweet, and surprising in all the right places. It reminded me quite a bit of Superbad, one of my favorite comedies–if you like Superbad, I’m confident you’ll enjoy Booksmart. I already look forward to watching it again.

Aladdin: This is the live-action version of the classic Disney film, and I had a lot of fun watching it. I don’t remember watching the original more than a few times when I was a kid, yet every song was instantly familiar. The casting for Aladdin and Jasmine was perfect, and Will Smith actually did a great job filling the shoes of Robin Williams as the genie. The movie also gives Jasmine more to do than in the original movie, which I thought was a nice update.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters: In the previous Godzilla film, I loved the Godzilla was the good guy, and that continues into this movie when the threat is significantly bigger. There are beautifully framed visuals of the monsters in this movie, but I feel like we spent way too much time embroiled in the drama of the humans when the monsters were more interesting and entertaining.

My list of top 10 most anticipated films of 2019 is filled with big popcorn flicks, so I’m glad to see a movie like Booksmart surprise and delight me. I’m hoping Late Night does the same thing in the near future.

What’s been your biggest surprise of 2019 so far (in terms of movies)? What did you think of Booksmart, Aladdin, and Godzilla?

  1. Biggest surprise for me is Apollo 11. I don’t particularly care about space exploration and I thought “First Man” last year was pretty mediocre. But man, this documentary on how they did the real mission back then was amazing, especially in IMAX.

    • Thanks for the recommendation! I really need to see that, along with They Shall Not Grow Old–I’ve heard the remastering of both is incredible.
