A Real Field of Dreams?

This is both slightly old news and news that could wait another 11 months. But I’m writing about it now!

Recently, Major League Baseball announced that the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox would play a game in August 2020 at the exact same field where the movie Field of Dreams was filmed.

I think this is such a cool idea! While I haven’t seen the movie in years, it still gives me the feels when I think about it. It’s a double dose of nostalgia for the movie plus the nostalgia integrated into the movie that makes me think the MLB game will be something special.

Apparently there’s no actual baseball field there now, so MLB will have to make one. The article I read about it said the stadium will be temporary, but I think it would be neat if they made something more permanent (if that’s what the owner of the land wants). I’m sure it generates a fair amount of tourism.

I’m also curious if ghost players will be allowed to play. Like, if Babe Ruth actually shows up, will they insert him in the lineup? Hopefully they’ll have rules to accommodate such appearances.

What do you think of the Field of Dreams baseball game idea?

  1. Admittedly, I’ve never seen that iconic movie, but your post has inspired me to head down to the local Blockbuster’s and rent…oh, wait, there’s no Blockbuster’s. Hmmm, I’ll have to find it elsewhere. In short, I’n not at all a sports guy, but things like this intrigue me, as I love all things historical.

  2. One of my favorite movies. And the book is even better. (I would say it’s not necessarily a *great* movie, unless you really love baseball. And I do.)

The field from the movie is still there, BTW. I’ve been there a couple times, and people are just playing ball and walking in corn all day. It’s super cool. However, the field isn’t up to MLB standards, hence the temporary ballpark next door.

    I’ll be watching!

  3. My grandmother lives about 20 minutes away from the Field of Dreams, and I have been there several times, as recently as last summer! My whole family was so excited when we read that they were doing a real game there. And yes, the ball field from the movie does exist, but definitely isn’t regulation size. I believe they are putting the new diamond on the other side of the corn field with “windows” along the outfield wall so you can see the corn. The house from the movie is still there, as well as the original bleachers, with “Ray loves Annie” carved in them. It’s pretty neat to see, and people do actually seem to disappear as they walk into the corn!

However, I think it will be a logistical nightmare to pull this off. The parking is limited – there’s just one small gravel lot right now, although there is a long-ish private road leading up to the house. And it’s out in the middle of nowhere along some back country roads. But maybe they’ll have people parking along the sides of the road with their headlights flashing as a nice tribute to the end of the film!

The new field is supposed to be able to accommodate 8,000 people, which is almost double the size of the population of the closest town, so I’m not sure how they’re going to lodge people. I keep trying to tell my grandma to list her house on Airbnb for that weekend and make some $$$!
