Have You Tried Any Subscription Boxes?

I recently received my first subscription box (as far as I can recall), a country-themed snack box from Universal Yums. For $15, every month they send you a box of 6 or 7 treats (sweet and salty) from a different country, allowing you to “travel” to that country by yourself or with a friend.

Megan and I decided to open the first box as a date night last weekend, with the idea of structuring the entire night around that country. The box said “Hindi,” so I picked an Indian-themed board game (Rajas of the Ganjas), made an Indian-themed drink, and turned on some light Indian music.

Then we opened the box, and it said, “Welcome to Turkey!”

After a moment of bewilderment, we shared a good laugh as we read that “Hindi” was just a clue to the country–it means “turkey” in Turkish. We decided to stick with the game, drink, and music.

And it was awesome! Each treat was unique, a little weird, and often delicious. We took our time. We’d select a treat, read about it, and then play the board game for a few minutes before stopping for another treat. My favorite snacks were the thyme-flavored chips and the chocolate-filled cookies.

Overall, we had a great time, and I look forward to another date night trip abroad next month (though this time we’ll open the box in advance to know the theme!)

Have you ever tried a subscription box service? How was your experience with it?

  1. My husband and I have been thinking about getting this very subscription; I think you’ve convinced me to go for it! We thought it would be fun for us and his two kiddos to “travel” around the world and learn something new about each place. The addition of a geographically appropriate board game is also a definite win!
