Have You Watched HBO’s “Watchmen”?

I’m in absolute awe of HBO’s recently completed Watchmen miniseries.

I’ve read the original graphic novel and seen the movie, so when I heard about the series, I thought it was just going to be a longer version of them. Boy was I wrong!

Basically, without spoiling anything, the series takes place in an alternate reality where the events of the original Watchmen really happened. Most of the action takes place in the present day, but there are some important flashbacks too.

The series delves into several examinations of social justice, adding a level of depth I rarely see in this form of entertainment. And overall, I think it’s brilliant that they writers explored a future based on a history as established by an existing work of fiction. Has that happened before?

Just a quick warning: The show does include some violence and sensitive issues, including certain scenes that are likely to make you uncomfortable. I think the end result is worth it, but you’ll know pretty early into the first episode if it’s a good fit for you.

If you’ve seen it, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! I’ve completed the series, so spoiler discussions are welcome.

  1. Watchmen, in my opinion is a masterpiece. There are so many elements that woven together. The alternate universe gives a lot of lee-way to story telling but still, you have to admire the way it’s put together.

Each episode peels back the layer of the Wonderland-onion. Like you said, I’m in awe.

  2. Amazing story telling.

Damon Lindelof was offered the chance to make the series, and turned it down a number of times before he eventually went ahead. He just didn’t think he had something worth entering the Universe. Until he did.

Listen to the official Podcast. Only 3 episodes, which each encompass 3 episodes of the show.

Then, watch The Leftovers, if you haven’t already done so. It is also another story telling masterpiece by Damon Lindelof.

Although he is quick to share the accolades with all of the writing staff, and the talented cast and crew. I mean he’s a white male, so he understood that he needed a lot of help in telling the story which revolves around an African American female.

And by the by, Regina King is amazing.

  3. I liked Watchmen quite a lot. I am a big fan of alternative futures/realities stories. I wish Alan Moore was involved. The one issue I had was how Dr. Manhattan was managed, although hopeful for Season 2. I thought Regina King was an excellent choice of casting.

  4. I had been holding off on this series because I couldn’t conceive of how it would possibly acknowledge the original material while creating something new. It is an effort that fails so painfully often.

But your perspective, as someone who read the original comics and still recommends the show, makes me hopeful for the series.
