I absolutely love heist movies, to the point that I posted a top 10 list of my favorites a while ago. I like the planning, the execution, the twists, the pivots, the daring escapes.
Sidenote: Is there a time loop heist film? If so, I need to watch it immediately, as those are two of my favorite genres. If not, perhaps I should write one: Someone tries to pull off an impossible heist, and when they fail, they restart at the beginning of the day. Learn and repeat until they get it right (and ideally break out of the loop).
Anyway, Lupin isn’t a film; rather, it’s a series of 5 episodes forming the first part of a series (the second part will release on Netflix this summer). I read a review saying that every episode of Lupin feels like Oceans 11, which was enough for me to give it a try.
Is the Oceans 11 comparison fair? It’s not far off. One of the best aspects of Lupin is that there’s some kind of a heist (or heist-like escapade) in every episode, but they’re all connected to a central story. Lupin is always one step ahead of everyone else.
The one “catch” is that the series is in French. I don’t mind reading subtitles; it just means you can’t get up for a snack and continue to listen to the show (unless, like my sister, you’re fluent in French–I recommend the show to her for that reason).
If you’ve seen Lupin, what did you think of it? Are there other heist shows that have a heist in every episode?
We loved the show. Both my wife and I are big heist movie fans. Are there any Heist themes boardgames out there (except Lacerda’s Escape plan, which is post heist technically)?
Hit “submit” too quickly: Be sure to watch “La Casa Papel” aka Money Heist on Netflix!
Thanks Hasan! I tried Money Heist a while ago and couldn’t really get into it, but I’ll give it a second chance. 🙂
Yup, we’ve been watching it and absolutely love it. Lupin is a flawed but brilliant hero who’s easy to root for. I do speak French and am especially enjoying how they use bordello and hooker as curse words.
Hmmm,
We may have to check this out.
I guess it isn’t a standalone series about the adventures of Remus Lupin from the Potterverse after all. 😉
Really enjoyed the show. My wife and I started and did not stop until we watched them all. Now I’m sad I need to wait till the summer to see the rest. 😉
There’s an episode of Star Trek: Discovery that is a time loop heist. The cold open shows the bad guy (who we recognize from an earlier episode) come on board the ship with intent to commandeer it and winds up murdering all our beloved characters and blowing the ship up…but not before he uses technology to go back in time and start over, learning from what went wrong. The rest of the episode involves him doing hundreds of such repeats until a member of the crew who is sensitive to time travel figures it out. It’s an absolutely brilliant episode – a great, serious sci fi mixed with humour (especially as Rainn Wilson is the bad guy).
Jeff, do you happen to know the season/episode number for that? I want to watch it!
Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad
Star Trek: Discovery: Season 1, Episode 7
Thanks!
