What’s Your Favorite Magical Academy Fiction?

Late last week, Wizards of the Coast announced that the next Magic set will be based in a school of magic called Strixhaven. As is the case in many such schools, students are divided into different colleges, each with a unique approach to magic.

I get excited whenever a new Magic set is announced, but I’m beyond excited for this one. I found myself reading through the lore for each house, and I’ll probably read the short fiction that Wizards shares throughout the reveal process.

There’s something special about magical academies that really appeals to me. I just think it’s a clever and exciting way to introduce the reader to a world of options. What better way to explain a magic system, for example, within a school of magic?

I’m sure there are many wonderful works of magical academy fiction missing from this list, but here are a few of my favorites. These aren’t all necessarily schools of magic, but they’re all about young people entering an speculative academy.

  • Red Rising
  • Harry Potter
  • The Magicians
  • The Rage of Dragons
  • Ender’s Game
  • The Ninth House
  • Skyward
  • The Black Prism and The Blinding Knife
  • Shadow and Bone
  • The Emperor’s Blades
  • The Name of the Wind
  • The Poppy War
  • Sky High
  • X-Men

One that I heard about recently and want to try is the book Sufficiently Advanced Magic. Can you think of other awesome books, TV shows, and movies that feature magical academies?
