Have You Watched Raya or the Mitchells? (My Thoughts)

Over the last two weekends we watched two really good animated films. I don’t have anything particularly poignant to say about either film, but on the level of entertainment, I’d recommend them both.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines flew under my radar as a kid’s movie, but this is very much the type of movie that all ages can enjoy. The film follows a family–the Mitchells–as they address some interpersonal issues during a Terminator-style world takeover by intelligent machines. The animation is both stunning and playful, to the point that it’s kind of hard to describe. You’ll get a taste of it in the trailer.

Overall, I’d highly recommend it as an action comedy. I laughed out loud at least 10 times, and it was fun to watch the family try to solve the puzzle of stopping the machines.

Raya and the Last Dragon premiered on Disney+ a few months ago, but it just became available without requiring an additional $30 fee (I’m not opposed to paying extra as we did for Mulan, but $30 was just a little too much of a barrier for Raya).

As with any Disney film, the animation is gorgeous. I enjoyed the mythology and worldbuilding (there’s a bit of Princess Mononoke here), and there are some incredible dueling scenes that remind me of footage from the 2020 video game Ghost of Tsushima.

While Mitchells is the funnier of the two films for me, Raya has some clever jokes as well, each contributing to a different character. I’d definitely recommend it as well, especially if you already have Disney+.

Have you watched either of these movies? What did you think?

  1. I just finished Raya, opened my emails, and saw this post. I have been recommending the Mitchell’s vs the machines to a bunch of people as well, and I would say, overall, I enjoyed that one more. It was simply more “fun” than Raya, though I liked the world building and theme of Raya more. Both fantastic movies that I will continue to recommend to others (although I will probably focus my recommendations on the Mitchell’s because I think Raya will be pretty popular and I think the Mitchell’s may fall to the background, but it shouldn’t because it was great).

  2. I’ve watched them both with my kids (12 & 8). We all loved them both, but Mitchell’s had me laughing out loud many times.

Our next one were looking forward too is Loki.
