For years I’ve been enamored by the idea of flying cars and jetpacks as viable modes of transportation. I think this stems both from a fascination with futuristic technology and a general dislike of traffic, inefficiency, and wasted space.
We’re still far away from flying vehicles as depicted in fiction: Cars that lift vertically out of parking spots and sail across airborne highways. In fact, some of the most viable options seem to be more like big drones.
But AirCar decided to pursue a vehicle that can drive both on the ground and in the air…and it’s magnificent.
I’ll post the video below so you can witness the 35-minute flight test. The coolest moment for me isn’t when the car takes off or flies (which is an engineering marvel in itself), but rather after it lands. The wings fold into the the car and the driver turns the vehicle onto a highway. Sure, it doesn’t meet any safety regulations, but it’s so seamless that it looks like something that really could find its way onto our roads (and skies).
Check it out. Would you drive this?
As someone who has spent hours and hours commuting in traffic the idea of a flying car has great appeal. The initial need for runways will make homes near regional airstrips quite popular. I would be happy to fly around Chicagoland if this becomes an option. Just imagine the accidents from those not observing the “rules of air”.
There is enough “carnage” on the roads. lol Letting the general public in the air seems like a bad idea. I mean I love Doc Brown, but I feel really nervous with him flying Marty around.
If it was all autonomous, then it might be viable. 🙂
