Have You Watched “Reservation Dogs”? (My Thoughts)

RESERVATION DOGS “California Dreamin’” Episode 6 (Airs, Monday, Sepyember 13) Pictured: (l-r) Devery Jacobs as Elora Danan, Dalton Cramer as Daniel, Paulina Alexis as Willie Jack, D’Pharoah Woon-A-Tai as Bear, Lane Factor as Cheese. CR: Shane Brown/FX

Earlier this year, I watched and greatly enjoyed two shows that delved into portions of modern Native American life: Rutherford Falls and Resident Alien. I highly recommended both of them in this post.

Following that article, several people recommended the Hulu show Reservation Dogs, and I recently watched the first season. It’s about a group of Indigenous teenagers on a reservation in Oklahoma who get in all sorts of trouble in a charming, entertaining, and sometimes heartbreaking way.

I’m pretty sure that all of the actors are Native Americans, and they’re all excellent. I didn’t recognize any of the main characters, but most episodes have an Indigenous guest star who is more famous. In one of those episodes they feature the Redbone song, “Come and Get Your Love,” which I had no idea was by a Native American band.

While the show has plenty of fun antics, it’s also quite serious at times, delving into issues related to parenthood, suicide, and poverty. That said, I would call it must-watch TV, especially if you’re a non-Indigenous American like me.

Have you watched Reservation Dogs? What did you think of it?
