Do You Listen to the “Smartless” Podcast?

Most of the podcasts I listen to while driving or working out are related to tabletop games. Perhaps inspired my foray into the You’re Wrong About and It’s Always Sunny podcasts–podcasts that are just as comedic as they are informative–recently I’ve been more open to podcasts that simply make me laugh.

It’s with that goal in mind that I gave Smartless a try, and I’m really glad that I did. It’s hosted by Arrested Development actors Will Arnett and Jason Bateman, as well as Will & Grace actor Sean Hayes.

Normally a podcast hosted by 3 celebrities wouldn’t really draw me in–their talents are in TV and movies, right? But I should have put aside that assumption, because their banter is just as hosting in podcast format as it is elsewhere.

For each 45-60 minute episode, one of the three hosts introduces a surprise guest (often a fellow actor/comedian, but not always), and the four people proceed to have a conversation. It’s kind of an interview–the hosts have questions for the guest–but a lot of it is just playful banter and stories.

I laugh out loud a LOT while listening to Smartless. Not only are these very funny people, but they play off each other well. The hosts often poke fun at each other, but they do so in a loving way (which is refreshing–I’ve listened to too many podcasts where the hosts seem to like each other less and less over time).

I also really appreciate how easy the hosts make it for the guest. There’s no preparation required–they just show up on video chat at the right time and leave a little under an hour later.

If you want a place to start, check out the Ryan Reynolds, Tina Fey, and Ricky Gervais episodes. I listen on Spotify, but I think new episodes appear on Amazon first.

Do you listen to Smartless? If you have any episodes to recommend–or any similarly funny podcasts–please let me know!

  2. These are hilarious. The other day I was listening to the Martin Short interview and was laughing out loud, probably looking like a crazy person while walking my dog.
