Did the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Surprise You as Much as It Surprised Me?

This weekend I was scrolling through our way-too-long list of streaming platforms for a movie to watch, and I stumbled upon Sonic the Hedgehog on HBO Max. I’ve been aware of the movie for a while, moreso because of the negative press from the original trailer about Sonic’s aesthetic that caused the studio to delay the release.

So it’s been off my radar for a while; but I had an inkling that people had actually enjoyed the movie. So I checked out the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. For the type of movie it is, it has a solid 63% from reviewers. But 93% of audiences enjoyed it–93%! I’m an audience too!

Megan and I kind of rolled our eyes and decided to give a try. Nothing to lose except for 90+ minutes of our time, right?

As it turns out, it was totally worth the time. I really, really enjoyed Sonic the Hedgehog.

It’s the type of movie that’s created for kids but written for adults. The dialogue is snappy and sassy–I laughed out loud a number of times. The action and CGI are great; somehow the movie makes a big blue hedgehog completely believable as part of the real world. The cast is excellent too.

Here’s a sentence I never thought I’d say: I’m really looking forward to the sequel to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie.

Did you see this film? Did it surprise you as it did me?

  1. Hi Jamey, I haven’t seen it yet but totally agree with the What Have I Got To Lose? attitude. If there’s something we want to watch but feel a bit ambivalent about we always say we’ll give it 20 minutes and if it hasn’t grabbed us by then, we’ll try something else. Works like a dream.
    Take care!
