Have You Watched “Search Party”? (My Thoughts)

The HBO Max show “Search Party” was completely off my radar until I happened upon some reviews for the fifth and final season, which recently aired. The description–a comedic drama involving several 20-something hipsters trying to solve a mystery–seemed to scratch a similar itch to last year’s Only Murders in the Building, so we gave it a try.

Having now completed all 5 seasons, I really don’t think there’s another show like Search Party. It’s just so weird! I mean that as a good thing. You really won’t know what to expect in this show, as there are so many twists and turns, all of them anchored in strong storytelling and characters.

Alia Shawkat (who I best know from her role on Arrested Development) is superb in Search Party. It’s her character, Dory, who drives the initial search for a missing acquaintance, and we mostly follow her actions and the ensuing consequences. Shawkat’s acting is truly incredible, especially her range–within the same character, she needs to do convey completely different emotions each season.

That’s actually what I think makes Search Party so unique and special among the vast array of quality shows: Each season is completely different than the previous season. Most shows that have some sort of overarching story tend to find a way to repeat it in a slightly different way from one season to the next. Not Search Party–the tone, locations, obstacles, and mysteries are completely different. Yet it still feels like a cohesive whole thanks to the characters.

Again, Search Party is weird. It starts a little weird, and then it gets really weird. It isn’t for everyone. But if you’re looking for a different type of half-hour show, I recommend giving it a few episodes to see if it piques your interest.

If you’ve already watched it, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
