Are You Watching “Halo”? (My Thoughts)

When Paramount Plus announced that they were creating a Halo TV series, I was intrigued. I’ve never actually played the video game, but given the success of the game, I figured they would go all-in to create an epic, big-budget science fiction series.

Fortunately, that turned out to be the case! Even without the futuristic cities, distant planets, spaceships, aliens, and outfits, it’s just cool to see people walking around in full power armor. There’s quite a bit of walking around in power armor on the show.

The show primarily focuses on two characters, with a third character (perhaps the most interesting) sometimes making an appearance. There’s John–aka Master Chief–an elite soldier struggling with his past. There’s Kwan Ha, an orphan looking to avenge her family (this is the weakest storyline–I’m still not quite sure why it’s in the show). And there’s Makee, a human who has lived most of her life in an alien society.

Other characters are emerging independent of those storylines, and their scenes have worked well for me so far. I actually think the show will work best in the long run with this ensemble approach in the midst of a larger conflict.

I was curious how much the show would focus on fan service. There’s plenty of it on screen, but it’s mostly subtle enough that non-Halo players like me aren’t at a loss. Really the only thing that confused me early on was related to a character called Cortana, and it was more of a casting issue than anything else (two of the actors–Natascha McElhone and Jen Taylor–look incredibly similar, and I don’t think this is intentional at all).

Overall, I’m enjoying Halo. I think it’s still finding it’s footing as an epic science fiction show, but it’s held up in the meantime but very high production value, a big mystery to keep me guessing, and some intriguing characters.

Are you watching it? What do you think so far?

  1. The Watch on YouTube did a bit of analysis on the show with some legitimate fan frustration. I’ve yet to watch it yet thought, I’m game to give it a try.

  2. Jen Taylor is the voice actress on the games. In the games Cortana is more or less an AI version of Halsey. So the fact they look similar is purposeful.
