What Food Do You Keep in Your Car?

Until the last few years, I don’t think I ever intentionally kept food in my car. But I’ve started keeping a few specific things in the center console, and I’m curious if you do the same, whether it’s for snacking, kids, necessity, or another reason.

Here’s what I have:

  • Dark Chocolate: I love chocolate in general, and sometimes if I’m running errands I’ll get an intense craving for sweets. Having a little chocolate in the car helps to prevent me from getting something much less healthy on the drive home (though I still do that sometimes too).
  • Cheez-Its: Megan inspired this one, and I’ve quite enjoyed it. Whenever we get out of the house to do a physical activity (previously rock climbing, now disc golfing), on the drive home we munch on a few reduced fat Cheez-Its to “replenish,” as we tell ourselves. They fit well in the center console if you take the bag out of the box.
  • Clif Bars: I get migraines if I don’t each breakfast, lunch, and dinner roughly at the same time each day, and Clif Bars have saved me a number of times when other activities get in the way of that schedule. I always keep a few in the car now.

Of course, I always try to have water in the car as well–I drink a lot of water?

What food do you keep in the car and why?

  1. I can’t imagine food staying good in the car for extended lengths of time. Chocolate would be a melted mess. I only pack snacks if we’re going to be gone for an extended period of time. I like my water ice cold, so I also bring my insulated water bottle so I can have that water be nice and cold. It’d be a cooler for long trips.

  2. We still buy imported Cheez-its from usafoods (Australian store/website that sells US food) since moving back to Australia.

I well remember my time living in the US and missing some comforting Aussie favourites – now it’s time to look after the wife here in Australia.

The bonus is: I love them too!

  3. I suppose your question could also be posed as “what foods do you intentionally bring in the car”. Im a sucker for Munchies Cheese fix, my popcorn, water and coffee, but also snacks for my boys. What fast food places do you as a vegan look out for if you miss a meal and dont have cliff?

    • Oh, I’m not vegan–just vegetarian most of the time. 🙂 For road trips, the Tesla takes a while to charge, so we generally have time to get something other than fast food. There’s a great breakfast biscuit place in Louisville, for example–egg and cheese.
