Yesterday brought the season finale of Ms. Marvel on Disney+, a 6-episode series featuring Kalama Khan as a teenage superhero.
There are a few things I really enjoyed about Ms. Marvel:
- The casting is excellent, especially Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel. She’s so much fun to watch–there’s just something mischievous about her expressions that are perfect for a high schooler with newfound superpowers.
- I love when the special effects bring the colorful background to life, like when graffiti moves or a neon sign morphs into a text received by a character. The first episode is full of these effects, but there weren’t nearly as many in the following episodes.
- It was great to see a show–and a piece of the Marvel universe–focused so much on South Asian Americans and Muslims. And it’s not just the characters, cast, and story; it’s also the writers, directors, musicians, and more.
- This didn’t occur to me until a friend mentioned it at game night yesterday, but it was really refreshing to see a young superhero story that didn’t emerge from family tragedy. Kamala’s family is often at the heart of each episode.
I look forward to seeing how Ms. Marvel fits into the wider MCU. I really like this short-series format for introducing new characters before they appear in the movies.
