What Do You Think of “The Rings of Power” So Far? (My Thoughts)

I’m not going to bury the lead: I think the first two episodes of the new Lord of the Rings show are absolutely spectacular.

Amazon spent quite a bit of money to bring this show to life, and the result is a movie-quality series. It was a joy to return to Middle Earth–the settings, special effects, music, casting, and more are superb. I’ve loved meeting younger versions of some characters from the movies, just as I’ve enjoyed meeting new characters for the first time.

Perhaps the biggest surprise to me was the level of mystery the show provides. The Rings of Power is set long before the events of Lord of the Rings, and the world is very different. As far as I can tell, this was a time before magic wove its way into the world.

Most importantly, the Lord of the Rings movies swiftly brushed over the process of making and distributing the rings, as if it was something Sauron did over the weekend. The Rings of Power makes it clear that this process was much more involved, and it has me wondering for the first time: How did Sauron convince anyone to accept the rings in the first place? I think that’s one of the big questions this show will answer.

Of course, these answers are somewhere in Tolkien’s books, but I don’t want to know. I want this beautiful, stunning show to reveal them in due time.
