Fungi really creep me out.
In the new HBO show based on a video game by the same name, a fungus rapidly causes the end of the world. Some of the creepiest shots in the show so far involve tiny tendrils reaching out of peoples’ mouths.
The “present” of the show is post-apocalyptic, though through 4 episodes, a decent amount of time is spent in the past. There’s a touching love story in episode 3, as well as some intense scenes in episode 1 as the outbreak begins to happen.

I like that the show follows a few key characters but also jumps to those other times and other perspectives. There aren’t a lot of people remaining in the world, which increases the value of each secondary story.
Also, I thought it was interesting that the main characters start their post-apocalyptic story in a city. That is, unlike The Walking Dead, they aren’t wandering around trying to find a safe place to rebuild their lives. Instead, they start in that place (which is safe from the fungus but not from fellow humans) and decide to venture out into the world. I thought that was a neat twist.
I’m really enjoying the show so far, and I look forward to learning more (and I hope to avoid the types of spoilers that people know if they’ve played the video game).
Are you watching The Last of Us? What do you think?
We’re watching! I didn’t realize at the time that it was based on a video game, and I’m surprised I like it this much. I ugly cried through much of the 3rd episode. I know nothing of the game, so I’m just enjoying the story and character development. I’m enjoying the acting – love both Pedro and Bella. I hope the ending ends up doing the series justice.
I have never played the videogame, but heard great stories about it so I went into the series only with a general idea about it. But loving it so far. I really enjoy that they are exploring the stories of other people in the world as well.
