Have You Watched a Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse?

Yesterday I wrote about my great experience watching Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Part of what made that experience so great is that I saw it at St. Louis’ newest theater, the Alamo Drafthouse.

I’m 99% sure this was my first time at an Alamo Drafthouse, though I’ve been intrigued by the theater for a long time. They’re one of the first theaters to serve food and drinks at your seat, and they have strict policies about phone usage.

Usually if I watch a movie at the theater, I don’t go during a mealtime. I love popcorn, but it isn’t a lunch or dinner replacement. But with the Alamo serving food, we went during lunch, which very much appeals to the multitasking side of me.

Fortunately, the food is really good. Surprisingly good. Megan and I split a breakfast taco, a bowl of popcorn, and French toast. We will definitely order the breakfast taco and the popcorn again, and I’m tempted by the milkshakes (they serve alcohol too, but that isn’t what I’m looking for at 11:30 in the morning).

You order from your seat–which you reserve in advance and is super comfy–and if you need to add anything to your order during the movie, you just push a button and the server will drop by. It’s a seamless process.

Overall, the Alamo provided one of the best movie-watching experiences I’ve ever had from start to finish. There are definitely other theaters that use this model, and I know I was benefiting from this theater being particularly new. But I absolutely look forward to the next movie there. Maybe the Mario movie? See the photo of my from the Alamo lobby.

Have you been to an Alamo Drafthouse or a theater like it?

  1. We don’t have an Alamo Drafthouse, but in Central Illinois we do have a drive in movie theater! In fact, we plan to take the kids there on Friday night for our second viewing of the Mario Movie (which I highly recommend)!

  2. I wish we had something like that in England, it sounds fantastic!. I love the cinema but I get anxious about people getting out their phones while the movie is in – because I always have to challenge them.
I wish they still had ushers in cinemas to deal with the phone issue .
Pressing a button and have the food come to you is amazing 🙂

  3. I lived in San Antonio for a few years and having easy access to an ADH is one of the things I miss the most about it. Great food, great rule enforcement, and one thing I absolutely love are the unique pre-shows they have that are typically themed to the movie you are about to see. Just an all around great experience. The closest one to me now is about an hour away, and we’ve gone a couple times but man…I wish they would expand just a little closer to me!

  4. I saw Con Air at the original Alamo Drafthouse when I first visited the US back in 2011(?).

They started the movie, and announced a drinking game where you took a drink every time you saw a fan.

Then they stopped the movie about 2 minutes in and cancelled the game before everyone died of alcohol poisoning!

Then halfway through they called an intermission and had some actors dressed as characters from the movie (Nic Cage, some other guy, and a guy dressed as the toy rabbit), who acted out the movie in pantomime.
Then they rolled the rest of the movie.

    Was quite an experience!
