Have You Watched the D&D Movie? (My Thoughts)

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is my favorite movie of 2023 so far. It’s the most surprised and delighted I’ve felt leaving a theater since the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Like Guardians, the D&D movie is an action-comedy driven by its characters. I had a hunch from the positive reviews that the comedy would be good, but I was still surprised by just how funny it was, even down to the smallest lines and reactions. Chris Pine in particular was perfectly cast–his delivery is excellent. There’s literally only one joke in the movie that didn’t land for me, a touch of slapstick humor. Everything else was great.

The action was also a lot of fun to watch. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there’s a long shot shows a character solving a series of problems in creative, ever-changing ways. There are multiple hand-to-hand combat sequences that are directed in such a way that you can actually tell what’s happening, and there are several daring escape scenes. There’s even an Avengers-like moment that might be a little too close to the Avengers, but it’s still cool.

Perhaps the biggest surprise to me was just how good the entire world looks. This is one of the best-looking fantasy worlds I’ve ever seen on film or TV. Significant time is spent in certain locations, while others are only seen in flashbacks. It all looks great, and I want to see more in this world.

Box office returns have been solid, but I don’t think they’re good enough yet to justify a sequel. So if you’re intrigued by the movie and want to see more films like this, I highly recommend seeing it in the theater. Jarnathan will appreciate it.
