Do You Like Island Drinks?

I was at a gathering a few weeks ago when someone offered me an “island drink”.

Up until that moment, I hadn’t considered that there was such a category of drink, even though I’ve had had plenty of them. Among these drinks–which could also be called “tropical drinks”–are pina coladas, mojitos, margaritas, daquiris, mai tais, and others.

Hearing that term made me realize: I love island drinks. Maybe it’s just summertime Jamey talking, but I really enjoy the taste of this category of drinks. They’re a little like dessert combined with a drink, and I’m fine with them with or without alcohol.

In fact, now that I’m aware of the category, I want to try more of them. I don’t think I’ve had a bay breeze, rum punch, Bahama mama, painkiller cocktail, Malibu sunset, or One and Done. But I want to!

Just the other day at Sister Cities Cajun I tried a new one: a Hurricane Kennedy. It was delicious! Now that I think about it, so many of the drinks we tried on our Starcruiser excursion were island drinks.

Also, I learned that there’s a bar in Chicago that serves only island drinks, each in a unique glass. It’s called Three Dots and Dash. I’m hoping to try it the next time I’m up north.

Is this a category of drink you like? If so, what’s your favorite? If not, what’s your category of drink of choice?
