Have You Watched “Gravity Falls”? (My Thoughts)

We recently attended a long weekend full of wonderful nerd stuff at a big vacation home with friends, and one of the “events” was centered around an animated show called Gravity Falls. Megan and I had never seen it, so we decided to watch the first few episode so we could better enjoy the event.

To our delight and surprise, the show is excellent. We really shouldn’t be surprised, as our friends have good taste, but I’m always a little hesitant about animated shows holding my attention for extended periods (opposed to 90-minute animated movies), especially if they’re centered around comical younger characters.

However, it’s the kid protagonists that end up bringing Gravity Falls to life, as they approach their summer vacation in a remote town with a desire for adventure, an openness to the surreal (each episode delves into a different supernatural or sci-fi element), and charming humor. I find the show very funny.

Also impressive is how the show balances stand-alone episodes with persistent threads. For example, in most shows if someone finds a new pet or friend, they’ll appear for a few random episodes and that’s it. When there’s a character development in Gravity Falls, it’s organically added to all episodes from then on.

We just finished the first 20-episode season, and there’s one more (the entire story is complete in 2 seasons). I’d highly recommend the show for adults and families.

Have you watched Gravity Falls? What did you think? Do you have any other favorite animated shows of the last few years?

  1. I’m trying to think of suggestions for animated shows I dont recall you talking about before. The only thing I can think of is The Legend of Vox Machina. Given its close tie to tabletop, I’m guessing you are familiar with it, but if not, highly recommend!

  2. Gravity falls is one of the greatest TV shows of all time! I have watched it many time all the way through. Other Cartoons that rock; Over the Garden Wall, Craig of the Creek, and Amphibia immediately come to mind.
