Have You Read “Fourth Wing”? (My Thoughts)

I’ve been eager to write about Fourth Wing ever since reading the first chapter. It immediately struck me as something familiar but new: A magical academy novel set in a fantasy world with death as a very real prospect for every character.

The author, Rebecca Yarros, makes it clear from the first few pages that this is not a book that will pull punches: Most of the people we follow are 20-23 years old. They curse. They fight. They have sex.

Also, they have dragons.

Yarros builds the world layer upon layer, revealing so many things I want to write about but really shouldn’t spoil because they’re much more fun to discover them as you read. I’m not even talking about plot spoilers–there’s just a lot of compelling elements of the Fourth Wing world, a lot of it tied to the dragons, the magic system, and the dragons themselves.

The plot moves at a satisfying pace as the protagonist, Violet, attempts to survive a brutal academy designed to weed out the weak. Of course, there are love interests that contribute to the intrigue–be prepared for some romantic intensity.

One of the best things about Fourth Wing–which is already a massive bestseller despite only being released earlier this year–is that its sequel has already released as well. I’m enjoying Iron Flame now, and I look forward to future books.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on Fourth Wing if you’ve read it (or anything else great you’ve read recently).

  1. Just finished Iron Flame! I’ve never really read romance, so the genre is new to me. I’m not sure I’m a huge fan but the dragons are so cool I can overlook the shortcomings I find (I’m rooting for Violet but I also find her insufferable). The world building and story is very fun and while I thought the first one was better written, I was just as addicted to the second one 🙂

    • I can absolutely relate to Violet being insufferable, especially in book 2. I’m about a third of the way through Iron Flame, and I’m a little worried that I’ll stop believing that here and Xaden have an actual love-level connection…I’m hoping for that to come back (and multi-faceted ways, not just sex). We’ll see!
