I’m delighted by The Marvels, the latest superhero movie to hit the big screen. It features a hook I can’t recall seeing before: Whenever any of the three leads uses their superpowers, they instantly swap places. That by itself is quite the directorial feat.
Despite the body swapping, the movie does something else I rarely see in these big-budget superhero movies: It actually lets all three lead characters share considerable screen time instead of splitting them up early and waiting until the finale to assemble them. In fact, Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, and Rambeau figure out how to work as a team less than halfway through the movie.
I read a few reviews saying that Ms Marvel (Iman Vellani) is the spark of the movie, and after seeing it, I couldn’t agree more. As fun as Captain Marvel and Rambeau are to watch, Iman and her character bring a level of much-needed levity, charm, and enthusiasm. This is one of the funniest Marvel movies, in my opinion.
Also, as an added bonus, the B-plot of the movie is about cats. I love it!
If you’re looking for a fresh take on the MCU, I definitely recommend The Marvels! If you’ve seen it, I’d love to hear what you enjoyed the most about the movie.
I am looking forward to Iman Vellani (Ms Marvel) being the lead actor in the forthcoming Young Avengers ensemble movie.
