Have You Watched the Show “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”? (My Thoughts)

The quality, thrill, and intrigue of the new show Mr. & Mrs. Smith completely caught me off guard. Perhaps most importantly, it has almost nothing to do with the movie of the same name.

In the movie, John and Jane don’t know that the other is also a spy. This is something they’ve kept from each other for years of marriage. You have to get past that deceit to enjoy the movie (which I recall being fun otherwise).

In contrast, Mr. & Mrs. Smith starts out with two strangers (played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine) signing up to become spies for a mysterious organization. Part of the deal is that they are legally married from the start. They meet at their fancy New York house (assigned to them by their employer), and together they navigate the trials and tribulations of such odd, dangerous circumstances.

It’s SO good.

Aside from the fresh premise, the execution of the action, and the character development, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly makes the show work so well. Part of it is that the dialogue is really well written, whether it’s a moment of levity or a deep conversation. Another is how each episode really stands out from the others, yet they’re also part of a bigger story. Beyond that, I don’t know. Some things just work.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith tells a complete, self-contained story, but I’d be perfectly happy if they decide to make a second season. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you watch the show!
