5 Quick Thoughts About Recently Watch Movies

I recently watched 5 really solid movies that I recommend, but I don’t have a full blog post of commentary about each one, so I’ll keep it short and sweet:

Orion and the Dark: This is a movie about fears, both those of the rational and irrational variety. It’s an animated film aimed at a younger audience, but I still thought it was great (especially as someone with plenty of paranoias). A clever hook is that “the Dark” isn’t just a concept; the Dark is a character in the movie.

Past Lives: This film is about two people who connect at different points in their lives, first in Korea as kid, then as college students separated by distance, then another 13 years later. It’s a beautiful movie about young love, and it does a superb job of not falling into any tropes (the main character’s husband even calls out some of those tropes).

John Wick 4: The fourth and final chapter in this series goes out with a bang…so many bangs. It’s essentially a violent video game in film form, and one of the best-direct scene even has the camera moving above a house as Wick moves from room to run with no cuts. There’s also the longest fall down a staircase I’ve ever seen and a 30-minute action scene set in Japan (or at least what people who make movies think Japan looks like).

Dumb Money: Based on the true story about someone who bets big on Gamespot stock and gains a huge following of people, Dumb Money was a lot of fun. I remember hearing about this while it was happening, but for some reason I assumed the person at the helm was the CEO of Gamespot, which isn’t the case at all. He was just a low-level stock analyst who bet on Gamespot stock, streamed about it, and didn’t sell.

Bank of Dave: This is a heartwarming movie about a person in Scotland who wanted to start a bank focused on serving the community. The movie is largely about what it takes to actually start a bank, one of those things I don’t often think about (banks have just always been around). In fact, while the movie is about the bank that Dave is trying to start, the main character is actually a lawyer who is trying to get the government to authorize the creation of the bank. Put that on your movie poster! (Yet it works.)

Have you watched any movies recently that you’d recommend?

  1. Watched Dumb Money and was fascinated by the story having lived through it. My wife and I didn’t go that route, but in the early days of Covid, we did invest in the at-least-to-me-obvious-choice of Johnson & Johnson and Moderna stocks and did okay, as we knew that we would have to come up with a vaccination/immunization.

The other movie I’ll recommend is The Laundromat…it’ll make you mad, but it’s very well done.
