New television shows often burst out of the gate with buzz and enthusiasm. By season 2 or 3, I feel like the buzz is lower even as the show finds its footing and is better than ever. So on occasion I like to highlight these non-premiere seasons for particularly great shows.
Girls5Eva is a half-hour comedy now on Netflix that feels like 30 Rock or Kimmy Schmidt with a touch of music (I think some of the writers, producers, and actors were actually on 30 Rock). It’s packed with humor and heart, and the music is incredibly catchy. If you’ve never seen it, lucky you: There are 3 episodes waiting for you on Netflix.
Welcome to Wrexham is a person-driven sports docuseries following a Welsh soccer (football) team stuck in a lower-tier and purchased by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney. I’m 6 episodes (out of 8) into season 3, and I’m regularly left in awe, in tears, or pumping my fist in celebration. Each episode is so well constructed. For example, an episode in season 3 is all about uncertainty, and it switches between a tough time for a specific player, a specific team, a specific game, and a very old Welsh man. It’s so good. Even if you’re not a sports fan–or if you are a sports fan who knows what happens to the team–I still highly recommend the show.
What’s a current show you love that keeps getting better several seasons into its run?
