Groupvergence 2024

Over an extended version of the last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending an event with 20+ friends, many of whom I know on some level through Megan and others. They’re delightful people, and I love letting my inner (and outer) nerd thrive when I’m with them.

In years past, this group of friends attended a geeky convention involving fun, silly, and nerdy events. Eventually they decided just to have a small version of the convention for themselves, and it became an annual friends reunion of sorts. This is the third year I’ve attended (here’s a link to my post in 2022 and another in 2023)

We rented a big vacation property just outside Branson, Missouri, and over 3.5 days we ate, drank, played games, and participated in a number of whimsical events. The house itself is huge; it includes a massive covered deck in the back, a tiered home theater, at least 10 bedrooms (each with its own private bath), a large kitchen, a tennis court, and a hot tub and swimming pool.

I’ll quickly run through some of the events and activities:

The weekend started with a Batman-themed escape room and cocktail party. There were 4 escape rooms and clues hidden around the house (including on some jigsaw puzzles), and every time a room was completed, we unlocked a new cocktail to try.

The Great Easy-Bake Oven Bakeoff had us pair up to bake something in an Easy Bake Oven, along with a decoration challenge for the showstopper. My team made two crepes in our oven.

We had a birthday party for Harry Potter, complete with non-alcoholic cocktails, floating candles, and a wand-making station (pretzel rods dipped in chocolate), along with a clear acknowledgment of JK Rowling’s poor treatment of transgender people.

Our event was a board game lunch where all the food we served was themed based on the food-themed games we played: Charcuterie, New York Slice, Point Salad, Bag of Chips, Nice Buns, Sushi Go, and Abandon All Artichokes were among the offerings.

I participated in the annual drinking panel in which people offer small sips of interesting drinks and cocktails. I’ll post separately about this soon.

There was also a chill board gaming afternoon–the weather was great, so we played Forest Shuffle and Cat in the Box outside (along with a number of other games inside).

I played pickleball every day on the house’s private tennis court, which was a lot of fun.

I think that covers most of the events. There were a few movies screenings that started a little too late at night for me, along with a chill tiki/pool party to end the weekend. Also, there was lots of good food throughout the weekend–my belly is still feeling the results!

Have you ever participated in an event, weekend, or convention like this?

  1. What a fantastic event – I love that you do loads of other stuff apart from board gaming .
Our week long Snodcon is primarily board gaming but people do other stuff also .
We will get you there one day! 🙂
