True crime isn’t a genre I actively seek, but every now and then I get sucked into a show, podcast, or book about a real-life mystery. I understand the appeal.
Bodkin–a 7-episode show on Netflix–also gets it. It’s a scripted drama about a true-crime podcaster (playedby Will Forte) visiting a small town in Ireland. He’s accompanied by a journalist (Siobhan Cullen) who is strikingly similar to the Lisbeth Salander character from Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and an assistant (Robyn Cara).
The three of them are there to hear the town’s story about 3 residents who disappeared years ago at an annual Halloween-like festival. The main characters unravel a number of other mysteries–many of them connected to the primary mystery–in their investigation, with every episode answering some questions and raising others (often with a big reveal at the end).
We’re not quite finished, but we’re hooked! Have you watched Bodkin or anything like it?
I’ve avoided true crime stuff, but I couldn’t help watching the Laci Peterson documentary, followed by the Worst Ex Ever series. I see Martin Freeman is in another series, A Confession so I’ll add that and Bodkin to the watch list. Thanks !
Would you recommend those documentaries?
I don’t like true crime but this show is not true crime, the topic is a fictionalized story about a true crime podcast. This is our kind of show so we watched it. It was ok, I think the beginning and the end were great, some of the middle parts were a bit slow. It didn’t have that “we must watch the next episode now” feel that many good shows give us but it was not bad. The story unfolds nicely with a good ending. Enjoy ethe rest of it!
That’s correct; as noted in the post, Bodkin is a scripted drama (not a true crime documentary).
