The latest Star Wars show, Skeleton Crew, is Goonies in space. How cool is that?!
I had no idea that’s what I was getting into as I sat down to watch the first episode, and it took me most of that episode to realize why it felt familiar. Quirky kids on bikes (speeders) on a suburban planet discover something buried in the forest that leads to a grand adventure.
The comparisons to Goonies continue from there, though I don’t want to spoil anything. The key is that it’s a kid-driven adventure that I’m finding quite entertaining as an adult (aside from one reason that I’ll mention in a moment). The presence of Jude Law helps, as does a big ongoing mystery, but there’s also just a strong “play” factor to the Star Wars universe for which kids make sense.
The one exception is the bickering among kids. It completely baffles me why writers (I’m looking at you, JK Rowling) think that people want to watch young friends fight with each other. It isn’t funny, it isn’t inspiring, and it isn’t entertaining.
Other than that unfortunate trope, I’m really enjoying Skeleton Crew as we approach the final episode of the season. Let me know what you think!
We have been watching weekly as a family; it’s nice to have that feeling of shared anticipation and fulfillment. They are short episodes but we always make popcorn.
This is such a great show. The whole suburban Star Wars setting was so disarming and weirdly charming, but of course things change pretty quickly, and the other settings have been pretty compelling as well. I love the creature and droid decision that have been made (and there’s a cool short YouTube video called Creatures and Droids describing the process of bringing them to life).
The bickering hasn’t bothered me because the plot is so kid-driven. It strikes the right tone for kids this age who are scared and doing their best to navigate pretty intense circumstances. Maybe as a mom of kids this age it just resonates differently (and I feel seen, hah!)
I’m sad to be coming up to the last episode!
That’s wonderful! I can see this being a great kids show, and I’m glad you don’t mind the bickering. It’s too much for the uncle in me who just wants to see my nieces and nephews get along. 🙂
