Cutting Off My Finger in the Kitchen When I’m Really Hungry (My Greatest Fear #68)

Has it really been 2 years–almost to the day–since I last posted “my greatest fear“? I have so many odd paranoias that I’m really surprised I’ve gone this long without sharing one. Fear not, though, as I have two in mind, and this is the first.

One of my favorite foods to eat for dinner along with a salad, fruit, and nuts is a piece of buttered bread, ideally from a local bakery. I can feel my stomach growling right now just thinking about it.

I’m cautious when cutting, as I’m never interested in slicing off all or part of my finger. But I’m particularly afraid of doing so when I’m really hungry.

What do you do in that situation? The right decision–especially if I chopped off a full finger–is to go right to the emergency room. But if I do that, I’m not going to eat for hours!

I’m writing this right before I go cut bread for dinner, so I’ll be extra cautious tonight. I hope you do the same! Have you ever had a kitchen accident that resulted in an emergency room visit?

  1. That picture in the post +cutting my finger while slicing bread is exactly what happened to me when I was about 9 years old. I was home alone (go figure, parenting in the eighties) and I was hungry so I was trying to cut a slice of bread. I didn’t know much about cutting and I held the bread just perfectly to cut into my finger with the knife. I don’t exactly remember what happened next, but wrapped my hand into something and I’m sure my mom was home not far after but I still have the small scar on my left index finger where the knife went it. Fun childhood memory 😉

  2. I had to go to the ER because I cut my finger with a mandolin slicer. I wanted to make sure I didn’t get an infection, because the cut was pretty deep, but I was out fairly quickly, and had no lasting problems!
