44 years ago, I was granted the incredible gift of not just two, but four parents: Two biological parents who were no longer dating and weren’t ready to raise a child, and two parents who chose me as their first child.
I was just a few days old at the time, so I don’t remember any of this. But I’m eternally grateful for the choices made by my biological mother and my parents. I have my life because of those choices.
I’m also glad that I took the plunge years ago to make some adoptions of my own: First Biddy, then Walter. Walter is still with us, as furry, snuggly, and talkative as ever. Even though I know how much love goes into choosing your family–as my parents did for me–my heart got so much bigger thanks to Biddy and Walter.
If you’re adopted too, your experience may be similar to mine or it might be quite different. I’m fortunate that my parents were always transparent about my origins, not something to hide and be revealed on a specific day. I’m also lucky that I had the option to connect with my biological mother whenever I wanted (I waited until I was in college), and we still correspond from time to time.
Regardless of your experience, if you’re adopted too, I hope it’s okay if I celebrate my kinship with you today. It’s perfectly normal that we’re adopted–there’s absolutely no stigma in it–but it’s also something special and unique that we share. Whether you’re old or young, human or cat, your story is different than mine, but it’s a badge of honor for me to share this common bond with you.
Happy adoption day!
Happy Adoption Day Jamey! As a half-adopted person, I know that we are all happy every day to have experienced the love of someone that choose to be there for us!
Thank you, Christopher! Happy half adoption to you too. 🙂
Happy Adoption Day! As a grandmother of 12, and 8 of them adopted through the foster care system, we have lots of Adoption Days to celebrate – and we do, each and every one of them!
That’s wonderful! Thank you for sharing. 🙂
Happy Adoption Day Jamey !!
I shared your post with my wife, as she was also adopted over 50 years ago, and she said that it made her day and put a smile on her face – so thank you.
Similar to you with Biddy and Walter, we have also adopted 4 greyhounds over the last 15-20 years through the Greyhound Adoption Program here in Melbourne, and they have all become great pets and companions, and we’ve been glad to give them all a safe and happy home.
Thank you so much, Stuart! I appreciate you and your wife joining the celebration (both for your wife and your greyhounds). 🙂
Happy Adoption Day to you Jamey!
