As much as I love rom coms, I rarely watch romantic dramas. I think it’s because I want a certain amount of levity to balance the intensity of on-screen courtship.
Fortunately, I decided to watch We Live in Time anyway. I was pleasantly surprised to find that–despite not being a comedy–it still offers enough humor to balance the intensity. Which is good, because there are some intense moments that feel very real.
Without any spoilers, the overall concept of We Live in Time is that it follows the love story and relationship of characters played by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, both of whom are excellent in this film.
Crucially, the movie follows the key moments of their relationship…but not in chronological order. I don’t fully understand the method to the madness of editing in this movie, but it somehow works. It’s almost as if you’re flipping back through your memories of a real relationship–you’re going to jump around from one memorable moment to the next.
The end result is one of the best romantic dramas I’ve seen in a long time, particularly one without a speculative or over-the-top hook (i.e., I did recently enjoy The Idea of You with Anne Hathaway, but it doesn’t feel like a situation that anyone can relate to outside of movie screens).
What’s your favorite romantic drama? Have you seen We Live in Time?
I haven’t seen We Live in Time, but it’s on the list! Not a single movie, but I would say my favorite romantic drama movies would have to the Before trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight).
Those movies are great! I think I’ve seen all 3.
