Apple TV’s new movie, The Gorge, is one of my favorite films of 2025 so far. It was completely off my radar, but I thought it was excellent on many levels.
The Gorge is best watched with little knowledge, so here’s the pitch: Two elite snipers–total strangers to each other–are assigned to year-long solitary posts on opposite sides of a vast, mysterious gorge. They are there to prevent something from getting out of the gorge.
This premise sets up a few mysteries. One, with such a vast gorge between the two towers, how will the two guards–played by Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy–get to know each other? Two, what’s in the gorge? And three, if there is actually something in the gorge, what is it, how did it get there, and can the guards prevent it from escaping?
I was pleasantly surprised by those questions and answers. The film takes itself seriously, but it’s also fun, charming, and even a little pulpy in a Stranger Things way. I really enjoyed it, and I hope you do too!
What did you watch this weekend?
I’ll definitely check this out.
Since I’ve been on a flight I watched Wolfs with Pitt and Clooney which was surprisingly entertaining. Lightweight crime drama. Good fun. And I started watching Conclave about the papal election process, I watched about half the movie until we landed but it was really good. I’m going to rent it this week to finish it.
I really liked Conclave, and I thought Wolfs was solid too!
