We’re just two episodes into Survivor season 48, and I’ve already cried twice! First it was the powerful conversation Eva had with Joe about her autism and his commitment to be there for herno matter what, and then–in the second episode–there was a great teaching moment for me right before the immunity challenge.
Before the challenge, Jeff asked a question to several survivors, including Mitch. From the first day, Mitch has been very open about his speech impediment. While answering the question, he struggled to finish a sentence, but he got there after a few seconds.
Jeff then proceeded to ask him (I’m paraphrasing), “Mitch, when you’re struggling, do you want help from someone, or is part of it to let you finish when you’re ready to finish?”
I absolutely love this question, as it was a reminder to me that people want (or don’t want) help in different ways, and the best method of learning is to ask. I know that my instinct when someone is struggling to find a word is to chime in with that word, and this was a great reminder that this type of help may not be the preference for some people (or anyone).
Mitch thanked Jeff for asking, and he said that he prefers patience. You can see it in this clip. Another great reason to watch Survivor! Thank you, Mitch and Jeff, for sharing this with me and everyone else.
