Most television I watch is with Megan, so if she isn’t into a show, it can take me quite a while to get through even a short season of a show. So when Black Mirror–an anthology show I enjoy but she doesn’t–recently returned for its 7th season, I turned to the internet to see if certain episodes were better than others.
Surprise: The internet has strong opinions about Black Mirror episode 7! Rankings were all over the place, but in general, the first few episodes of the season are viewed as the weakest.
I decided to watch them anyway, and I’m glad I did. For me, a subpar episode of Black Mirror is still a great experience.
- Episode 1 follows a couple who make rather extreme sacrifices for each other in an attempt to extend the time they have together.
- Episode 2 is about a chef whose reality becomes distorted after she reconnects with an old schoolmate.
- Episode 3 is about an actress who makes an unexpected connection while filming a remake of an old movie.
I enjoyed all three for different reasons, but episode 3 caught me off guard the most, as critics seem to consistently rank it as the worst episode. I thought it was a brilliant use of technology and featured a powerful, bittersweet love story that left me to tears.
All of this was a good reminder that I don’t need to look at critical rankings for media I already love. I can just enjoy it for what it is. Can you relate to that?
