This week we started watching a relatively new show called Got to Get Out. It follows around 20 people who are “locked” in a house and are tempted by an ever-increasing amount of money to “escape” through windows that unlock at very specific times. There’s even a watchtower and a big red button the other contestants can use to catch someone who is trying to escape.
Late in the first episode, a contestant reveals that they are a tabletop game designer. My spidey-sense started tingling, though I wasn’t sure why until the next day: I think I may have been scouted to appear on this show, most likely in the same slot as the game designer they selected.
Around a year ago I got a message on Instagram from someone claiming to be a TV producer. They asked if I would be interested in a roughly 2-week shoot to be “locked” in a house in a competition to escape from the house to earn money.
Sounds like Got to Get Out, doesn’t it?
I can’t 100% confirm that this is the same show, and I declined the offer, so I’ll never know if I would have actually made it. But it’s fun to think about what the experience would have been.
While trying to find this Instagram message, I found another one from a casting team for the new show “Destination X,” which someone just recommended to me yesterday (I had completely forgotten about that message).
Given how much I value my work and home time, I don’t think there’s a show that could lure me away for 2+ weeks (my ideal vacation is 4-7 days). What about you? Is there a show–or type of show–that you would gladly compete on for a few weeks?
I would not but not for the same reasons. I used to watch and like many reality shows and I still watch from time to time but my overall opinion on them really degraded over the years. The man-eat-man hunger game style competition plus the constant pressure from the producers forcing to make it interesting and dramatic put me off of most of these shows. To me it’s just human nature at its worse. I cannot see myself being in this kind of environment for any extended time.
I will add that if you are a celebrity, I bet you are treated differently.
Unlike you, I have minimal responsibilities, so I would say yes to most competition shows in a heartbeat. Survivor is still the number one pipe dream, but I’ve always thought would be fun to be on Squid Game too.
Jamey,
While I’ve only seen parts of a few episodes, I could see either my wife and I or my daughter and I engaging in Amazing Race, as we travel well, have a keen sense of direction, and love these types of competitions.
Cheers,
Joe
