I love deviled eggs. They’re by far my favorite way to eat eggs. I’ve tried making them with different types of eggs, and I’ve tried ordering them at restaurants when they ask how I like my eggs.
As a mostly-vegetarian, eggs are an easy way for me to add some protein to my day, so you might think that I’d be excited when a restaurant offers deviled eggs. Sometimes I am, but I regularly buy eggs from the farmer’s market and devil them (kewpie mayo, spicy brown mustard, black pepper, Old Bay, and chicken salt).
So when faced with $9 restaurant deviled eggs (usually for 6-8 halves) compared to paying around that much for a dozen eggs that I can devil at home (24 halves), it’s increasingly rare that I choose deviled eggs at restaurants despite my love of them. It’s an oxymoron.
Do you have any dishes like this? Food you love, but you’re comfortable making it on a regular basis, so you’re less likely to order it at restaurants?
That’s a good question! I’ll have to think about that. Just commenting because I love sharing that when Annika was much littler, she misheard deviled eggs as “doubled eggs,” so that’s what we call them now. It sort of makes sense!
I generally go to restaurants for things I can’t make at home–a great steak, pad Thai, tikka masala. But I also love a great salad. I can make a great salad, but since I love them so much, I am happy to get them at a restaurant and have them at home!
Doubled eggs! That actually makes sense–you’re turning one egg into two components. 🙂
I rarely order anything at a restaurant that I’d easily make at home. That would include steak and most things involving pasta. We grill a better steak here than most restaurants.
Spaghetti for sure, also basic grilled cheese. Really anything super basic and quick.
For some reason though, I don’t mind ordering a BLT.
A restaurant will always do a food better than I ever could. Now, is it as healthy? Probably not.
My wife and I eat out often (generally 4-6 meals per week) as despite loving to cook, we also love to eat as restaurants. I actually love to order things that I make all the time, as it often provides inspiration for how to riff on, or improve, old favourites. When we ate out less often I might have been less likely to “waste” a restaurant meal on something I could make at home, but nowadays it’s not something I worry about at all.
That’s a fun way to look at it!
