It’s very rare that I see a musician live in concert; I think the last time may have been Me Like Bees, several years ago. But a few friends were interested in seeing Lucy Dacus here in St. Louis, so we made dinner plans and bought tickets to the Monday show (an interesting night for a concert, but it was packed!)
I heard of Lucy originally because she attended my high school (years after me–I’m class of ’99, she’s ’13). Turns out she’s incredibly talented and prolific, and I really like the sound of her music.
As I now know from seeing her live, she is an incredible performer. She completely commanded the stage in front of thousands of people, making the Stifel Theatre feel much smaller than it really is. While each song led almost immediately into the next, the set changed several times based on the type of song (she alternated between fast- and slow-paced songs).
The most memorable part of the performance happened around halfway through when Lucy invited some special guests to the stage. 7 couples emerged from backstage and danced together why Lucy sang…and then Lucy married each of the couples! For real! It was so beautiful–can you imagine getting married on stage while your favorite musician sang for you?
If you have the chance to see Lucy during her tour, I highly recommend it. Here’s the tour list (and it’s worth showing up for the opener, Slow Pulp).
