Kettle Cooked Chips: What Am I Missing?

There are a few types of potato chips I occasionally crave: Billy Goat and Red Hot Riplets (St. Louis brands), Fritos, and wavy/ridged chips. But there’s an entirely genre of chips I just honestly don’t understand, and maybe you can help: What am I missing in regards to kettle cooked chips?

There are so many kettle cooked options that there must be a massive audience for them. But to me they’re strictly inferior to any equivalents with the same flavor for one key reason: They’re too crunchy.

I like a crisp chip. But kettle-cooked chips are hard. They put my jaw through a workout, and the resulting shards are so sharp that they poke my gums.

But perhaps the extra crush is the appeal. Is that it? Are normal chips just not crunchy enough? What types of chips do you occasionally crave?

  1. Are you a regular popcorn or kettle popcorn guy? For me, the Kettle brand chips are nostalgic. They used to come in flavors that other brands simply didn’t have. But, now kettle style chips come from many different brands in all sorts of flavors.

  2. To each their own, but I’m not a big fan of kettle chips either. I can’t eat chips often, but every now and again, I treat myself to Jay’s “Hot Stuff” spicy chips!

  3. If you ever get a chance, I recommend Wrap City kettle chips. They’re a new brand out of New Hampshire. I like how they are thicker than normal chips and tastier – maybe because they use Russet potatoes.
