I love a heist movie, but in the 9 years since the previous Now You See Me movie, I completely forgot that these are about magician thieves pulling off grandiose heists. So I was delighted to remember this key detail during the first few minutes of the third installment, which we saw in the theater a few days ago.
For pure popcorn entertainment, the movie was a lot of fun. It tries to bridge the gap between the original cast and three potential new leads, and I think it accomplishes this goal better than most movies that try the same thing, largely because it’s a great sense of humor and tension.
However, I’ll remember the movie for two specific scenes. I won’t spoil either of them, but I’ll say this: There’s a scene with an extended “oner” (a long, uncut shot) that is pure fun and must have taken a ton of time to pull off. There’s also a scene in which some of the lead characters are in peril, and instead of solving the problem with movie magic or actual magic, they use science (which makes the scene even more magical).
Last, I’ll add this: One of the reasons I like heist fiction so much is that a great heist gives me enough information to guess how they’re doing it, but not so much information that the reveal isn’t satisfying. Every heist is a solveable twist that’s just out of reach. Now You See Me does that really well.
Let me know what you think if you see the movie (or if you recommend any other movie you’ve recently watched)!
This movie was good. It did everything you described.
Other movies I would recommend:
Predator: Badlands – this one kind of surprised me as it rocketed up to the BEST Predator movie of the series. Do not sleep on seeing this one on the biggest screen you can.
Regretting You – this was a well done Romance/Drama movie that I think you’d enjoy Jamey.
Christy – a real life story about one of the first women boxers in America. There are some subject matters covered that won’t sit well with some people, but it’s a portrayal of somone’s life. I did not realize there was such controversy over this movie before I saw it. Put aside your feelings about Sidney Sweeney – just enjoy this movie when it comes to streaming.
I’m really hoping to see Predator: Badlands in the theater. Thanks for the recommendation about Regretting You! I wouldn’t say I have any particular feelings about Sidney Sweeney, and I appreciate the heads up about Christy.
