Have You Watched “A League of Their Own”? (My Thoughts)

Are there any movies that you’ve heard about for years and that it feels like everyone else has seen, but you haven’t? A League of Their Own is one of those movies for me. 33 years after its release, I finally watched it this weekend…and I thought it was an absolute delightful.

The premise of the film is that Major League Baseball took a break during WWII, and to fill the void, a women’s baseball league was formed. This was one of the biggest surprises to me–I wasn’t aware of that historical context or the approach taken (i.e., the women had to go to etiquette school and each team was assigned a chaperone).

The other biggest surprise was how funny the movie is. I laughed out loud a number of times, sometimes due to the dialogue, sometimes due to the stellar cast.

What’s a movie that has slipped under your radar for several decades? Or one that took you forever to watch, and you’re glad you finally did?

  1. The Birds. Twenty years ago, I tried watching it three times but kept falling asleep. I tried again this year, but with a two-day rental and I forced myself another three times and I finally finished it. I can finally check that box!

  2. I completely missed The Emperor’s New Groove. It came out when I was in college, and I wasn’t watching many movies at that point. I’ve made up for not seeing that one by getting a half dozen viewings in over the last year. It is endlessly rewatchable and quotable!

  3. A League of Their Own is a great sports movie! I haven’t seen it in a long time but I remember wondering when I watched it “Did Dottie drop the ball on purpose?”
