I’m smitten with The Everlasting by Alix Harrow.
If you’re looking for literary fiction with a hint of the Arturian legend and a slightly speculative aspect, read no further. If you’d like to know a little more, keep going.
Within the first chapter or so of The Everlasting, you know a few crucial things: One, the book is set in a different world, but one that is largely grounded in the world as we know it. It’s just called a different name and has a different history. A crucial part of that history is a legendary figure named Una the Everlasting, a larger-than-life figure who existed in this world. Last, you know that the main character has suddenly been transported from the present to the past, where he immediately encounters Una.
This is just really the beginning of things to come, but it was more than enough to hook me into the book and leave me eager to return every night. I love the intersection between reality and legend, as I’m constantly kept guessing about what veers into fantasy and what is just the story of this world.
I’m not finished yet, and I’m sure there’s plenty more to come. I highly recommend The Everlasting, and I’m curious to hear your thoughts if you give it a try.
I knew you’d love it!
I’m intrigued indeed.
