Survivor 50 Is Here!

Last Wednesday was the long-awaited, 3-hour season premiere of Survivor season 50. There are 24 returning contestants spanning all the way back to the first season (including, somewhat oddly, a few seasons with 2 or 3 returning players), including several past winners.

I loved how the premiere began with an epic highlight reel that reminded us of what made these people special to Survivor fans, followed by Jeff reminding us that we got to vote on many aspects of the show. As it turns out, Survivor fans are brutal! I voted to give the players rice and not make them compete for starting supplies, but I was in the minority.

It’s clear from the first episode that there are players with relationships that exist outside of the game, though players didn’t have control over their tribes, so it probably won’t be until the merge that we see the full impact of so many returning players. I like how the game design of many challenges so far includes a social choice to accompany skills and athleticism.

I think it’s shaping up to be an epic season worth watching even if you’ve never tuned into Survivor. But it’s a particular treat if you are a Survivor fan, and I’m curious to see how other fan votes impact the season.

What did you think of the season 50 premiere?

  1. Should be an epic season for sure. The return of at least 1 brutal part from past seasons (no spoiler here) and some really unique twists to the journey challenges and more in the other challenges should keep it interesting.

I do NOT understand why these tribes continue to keep such sharp game players week after week, especially when they stumble badly in a challenge. I get there is a social aspect, but these players need to be more brutal in their votes when they can.

  2. I was a bit worried that season 50 might get a bit messed up with so many big name returning players, but so far, so good.

I’m in a Survivor 50 fantasy league and Charlie, Aubrey and Colby are my players, so it’s a bit of extra fun. I’m excited for episode 2 tomorrow night!

    • Good luck to your picks! Charlie and Aubrey didn’t get much screen time in the first episode, so I’m looking forward to more of them in the future.

  3. Have you checked out Austrailian Survivor? If not, you absolutely should, it’s been pretty great, especially the last few seasons.
