Last year we learned of a need at the World Bird Sanctuary for an owlet aviary designed from the ground up. The concept is that there is an adult owl at WBS, Archimedes, who cannot be released to the wild and happens to be really good at raising owlets so that they can thrive when released.
The problem was that Archimedes had a pretty small aviary that gets crowded quickly. So we decided to sponsor the creation of a new, much larger aviary for Archimedes and any rescued owlets whom he could raise to be fully functional owls.
The aviary was ready in early March, and Megan and I visited with our friend Laura to introduce Archimedes to his new home. I got emotional seeing the signage (“In memory of all great fathers”) and then spent some time with Archie has he hopped around the aviary.
So far there are no rescue owlets, but Archimedes has fully embraced his home. If you’d like to watch him, there is an ongoing Twitch stream of him and his neighbor. I turn it on from time to time to see how they’re doing. As I write this, they aren’t on camera, but they’re around somewhere.
