On a slower-paced Memorial Day today, Megan and I treated ourselves to lunch and a movie: We saw the new Mandalorian and Grogu film, which is the first new Star Wars movie in theaters in 7 years!
I really enjoyed the movie. Great action, good forward momentum, more personal stakes than most Star Wars movies, and Grogu continues to be adorable every time he’s on the screen.
The movie does two of my favorite things in its action scenes: One, there are mostly longer shots (5-10 seconds), not a series of quick cuts, giving you a great feel for the scene. Two, Mando is almost always presented with an insurmountable obstacle in every action scene that he has to solve in a creative way. I love that.
The movie is beautiful, and the music is SO good. There’s some traditional Star Wars music, variations on the Mandalorian theme, and two other repeated scores that have retro vibes to them (Shakari and Strap In).
I knew nothing about the movie going in, and I’m glad that was the case, as there’s a major character (someone new to Star Wars) who plays a prominent and surprising role. I won’t spoil anything, but I really enjoyed Rotta.
You may be accustomed to watching Grogu from the comfort of your couch, but I’m definitely glad I saw this on the big screen, and I’d recommend that experience. Let me know your favorite part/aspect/character if you see it!
