Have You Watched “Widow’s Bay”? (My Thoughts)

Someone pitched Widow’s Bay to me as “Parks & Rec” meets “Midnight Mass”, and I was instantly sold.

It’s a truly accurate pitch, as the show follows a small-town mayoral office on an east coast island with dark supernatural issues. I might add that Widow’s Bay has slight Lake Placid and Cabin the Woods vibes in that the residents are equally bewildered and accepting of all the odd occurrences. For example, a throwaway line by an older resident (about a man she dated years ago) is, “He was bitten by an animal, then he turned into that animal,” followed by a baffled look from the person listening to her.

The show successfully treads a very difficult line between self-contained episodes and ongoing stories/lore. For example, there’s a great episode focusing on my favorite character, Patricia, in which she throws a party that takes a dark turn. The episode stands on its own with a distinct beginning and end, but the events in it matter for future episodes and are referenced several times.

The show does have a few scary moments (which, of course, my brain reminded me of whenver I wokr up in the middle of the night last week), but there’s far more comedy than horror.

Also, delightfully, the show is new on Apple TV, but as of this writing the first season is complete, so you can watch all 10 episodes right now if you want to. It appears that a second season is in the works, though the first season has a satisfying end that answers nearly every question.

I highly recommend Widow’s Bay, and I look forward to hearing your favorite parts in the comments! Also, are you watching anything great right now?
