The Sheep Detectives is Knives Out meets Babe.
Having writtten that tagline, I could probably wrap up this post. That’s all you need to know if you’re curious about The Sheep Detectives, which is now streaming on Prime. But of course I have a few other thoughts to share.
For some reason I thought this movie was about a few people who were investigating sheep-related mysteries. Within the first 5 minutes of the movie, I realized that it was quite the opposite, in a charming way: The sheep can talk to each other, and they are attempting to solve a human mystery.
While the people have their time in the spotlight, the movie really shines as a result of the sheep. They are full-fledged characters, full of life, humor, flaws, and strong arcs.
In most movies like this, there would be a lone detective who figures everything out. The Sheep Detectives shows the power of an detective ensemble: We know the sheep aren’t the culprit, so we can root for them to try to work together to solve the mystery, each using their strengths and addressing their weaknesses while doing so.
The Sheep Detectives made me smile from start to finish. If you need a movie to do that (or you just want to watch a good mystery), I highly recommend the film, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
I’m looking forward to seeing the movie- have read the book it’s based on (“Three Bags Full” by Leonie Swann- I really do like this title more) a couple of times. There’s a sequel “Big Bad Will” if you want the flock to have werewolf adventures too.
Oh, that’s fun! Thanks for letting me know about Big Bad Will.
I saw this movie in the theatre. It was entertaining and full of heart. I will say I was surprised to see it show up so soon on Prime but am happy others will have a chance to see it now.
I’m glad you enjoyed it too! 🙂
