We’re currently watching Stick on Apple TV, and I think it may be the best Ted Lasso-like show since Ted Lasso (which is returning soon for a fourth season!).
In Stick, Owen Wilson plays a former pro golfer who finds purpose in mentoring a very talented kid in his 20s. It’s a road trip show, with a great cast traveling from tournament to tournament as the kid tries to qualify for an amateur championship.
It’s heartwarming, it’s funny, and it’s inspiring. It’s different than Ted Lasso, but it has enough strong similarities to fit into this wonderful genre of well-meaning scripted sports comedies. I highly recommend it.
If you’re looking to scratch the Ted Lasso itch before the new season, I also recommend Running Point (basketball) and Chad Powers (American football). Both approach comedy and drama differently, and in my opinion both succeed at exploring the classic comeback story in fresh ways.
I’m really glad that Ted Lasso revolutionized the scripted sports show so we can get these other series. They’re really just about people trying to do their best and be their best selves rather than focusing on antagonists like in classic sports movies.
Do you have a favorite (or another recommendation) in this newer genre?
