Over the last few months I’ve watched some movies I enjoyed, though none of them gave me enough food for though to devote a post solely to them. So here are some quick summaries and recommendations for each of them. They’re all available on streaming.
The Love Hypothesis: I’m always in for a good rom com, and this one really shines thanks to the supporting cast, especially Rachel Marsh and Tom Bateman. The premise is your standard fake relationship, but some great comedy comes from Bateman doing his best Mr. Darcy. The movie makes even more sense if you know that the original source material was fan fiction about Rey and Kylo Ren from Star Wars.
War Machine: During Navy Seal tryouts, an alien robot causes huge issues for the recruits. I like that Alan Ritchson was cast as the lead, as he looks like someone who could go toe-to-toe with a killer robot, but even he is no match for this particular machine. The movie constantly leaves you wondering how the robot can possibly be defeated, and there’s actually a pretty clever answer to that question.
Rush: I had heard many great things about this racing movie, and at first it felt like a movie I’d seen several times before. Bad-boy racer vs diligent racer? We’ve all seen that before, right? As it turns out, this film appears to cover the source material for that racing-movie trope (James Hunt vs Niki Lauda). It’s quite good.
Send Help: Are there any fellow Survivor fans out there who feel like they could survive on a deserted island? That’s Rachel McAdam’s character in this film. Unfortunately, she’s accompanied by her boss, who is cruel and chauvinistic. Their dynamic presents some truly memorable moments and twists. I would say that it got a little too gory for my tastes, but I appreciate what it was aiming for.
Have you seen any of these movies, or do you have any recommendations this month?
