We’re currently watching Stick on Apple TV, and I think it may be the best Ted Lasso-like show since Ted Lasso (which is returning soon for a fourth season!). In Stick, Owen Wilson plays a former pro golfer who finds purpose in mentoring a very talented kid in his 20s. It’s a road trip show, … Read more
Just so there’s no confusion, these are two VERY different shows. They just happen to both be on Apple TV, and I really enjoyed both of them. Rooster stars Steve Carrell as a famous author who accepts a temporary teaching position at a liberal arts college, where his daughter is a professor. It’s full of … Read more
Someone pitched Widow’s Bay to me as “Parks & Rec” meets “Midnight Mass”, and I was instantly sold. It’s a truly accurate pitch, as the show follows a small-town mayoral office on an east coast island with dark supernatural issues. I might add that Widow’s Bay has slight Lake Placid and Cabin the Woods vibes … Read more
I must admit that when I first heard about The Boroughs, a show produced by the Stranger Things directors–and looks almost exactly like Stranger Things, but in a retirement community–my first thought was, “Do we really need a new Stranger Things already?” As it turns out, we do! I loved The Boroughs. We swept through … Read more
I just wanted to give a little shoutout to Apple TV, as I’m really enjoying not one, not two, but THREE high-production shows that probably aren’t getting as much attention as they deserve because they’re past the first season. Also, this doesn’t even include Shrinking, whose third season ended recently. The following are all actively … Read more
Who knew that a prank show could be about kindness, empathy, and compassion? I loved the original Jury Duty show, so I was curious about this new season. Could they really pull it off again? After finishing this season’s 8 episodes, my answer is a resounding yes. The premise of the show is that it … Read more
We just finished watching The Traitors season 4 (US edition), and I would say it’s by far the best designed season yet. The show continues to find ways to cast suspicion on the traitors–who have a huge advantage over the faithful–while still leaving plenty of room for social dynamics. The season also included my favorite … Read more
Last Wednesday was the long-awaited, 3-hour season premiere of Survivor season 50. There are 24 returning contestants spanning all the way back to the first season (including, somewhat oddly, a few seasons with 2 or 3 returning players), including several past winners. I loved how the premiere began with an epic highlight reel that reminded … Read more
Do you like Ted Lasso, but you prefer American football to soccer? I have a show for you. Similar to Ted Lasso, Chad Powers started as a short sketch played mostly for comedy. Real-life quarterback Eli Manning dressed up with a bunch of prosthetics and pretended to be a walk-on quarterback at Penn State. The … Read more
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has truly changed the way I think about stakes on TV (and movies, as it’s essentially a 3-hour movie split into 6 parts). Whether it’s other Game of Thrones shows or pretty much any drama, the stakes of at least one of the plots are typically quite high. They … Read more
